If the Autumn season has caught you by surprise, then don’t worry, you’re not the only one. But I’m hoping to rectify this for the both of us with today’s article about coats. I will shamefully confess that the cold season caught me unprepared for its arrival. And this is a bit of a wonder since I am usually a stickler for planning ahead. Fortunately, the only downfall was that I had to do some last minute shopping in order to get ready for the cold front ahead. Unfortunately, I ended up paying the price, both in a literal and figurative sense, for not preparing ahead of time.

Why I prefer planning ahead of time…

For today’s selection of products, money was no object. But this was not as much by choice but rather by stupidity on my part and last minute decision making. The weather has turned fairly cold and it made it clear that I couldn’t go out anymore without a proper jacket. This meant that I had to pick one from what the stores currently had available, in the middle of the Autumn season. And I’m guessing you all know what the end result was. Me having to buy a coat at full price, with no sight of discounts or sales. Which is actually not a fun thing to do on a tight budget. But, to turn this into a positive, let’s say that in today’s article I focused more to find something I love and less to find it in a certain price range.

The purpose of coats…

There are plenty of jackets out there that are first of all bought for their style and look. These jackets are usually not as practical and they are worn more to complete an outfit or make a fashion statement. I am not saying that there is something wrong with this sort of jacket. I admire and love those who plan an outfit to the last detail, such as the coat, and make it an integral part of their daily outfit, not just a cover-up. These are usually people with a really defined sense of style and I have nothing but respect for them. But in my case, I put practicality first and foremost. Of course that I will also pick out a certain style and look for the jacket, but for me its main purpose is to keep me warm during the Autumn/Winter seasons.

Let’s talk style…

First of all, you must have noticed that I like a certain length when it comes to my coats. For me, the proper jacket will keep both my back and rear (if you’ll allow me this use of language). This can be considered a style choice, since I also prefer that my T-shirts, sweaters, or hoodies to be not as long but in the same range. But it is also a choice that I made for health reasons. I am prone to back pain and I try to be very careful, especially during the colder seasons.

Second, I have a real issue with coats that don’t allow you the necessary mobility when wearing them. I have noticed that there are certain types of coats or jackets that seem like they are only meant to keep you warm. And this goes a little to the extreme since sometimes they forget about style or mobility altogether. This only leaves you with a heavy, bulky, and not so appealing coat that only has one purpose. It is one of the main reasons for which I am very picky with my clothes. When it comes to a good coat I consider that warmth is on the same level as mobility and style. And given the choice, I will never loose one of these for the other two.

Third, I would like to talk a bit about looks. I’ve mentioned that the first argument for me when choosing a coat is practicality. And yes, I will always choose a coat made from an impermeable material rather than one that may look better. Why? Because I am a one coat kind of person. Both due to not having a large budget, which means that I can’t spend most of my income of several different coats because I like how they look. But also because I have a simple and general style of dressing, which allows me to have a general coat, which I use no matter the occasion.

So if I were to describe the perfect coat for me in a few words it would be something like this: simple, impermeable, light, hooded, warm, large pockets, gorgeous color, with a touch of detail to make it stand out.

To sum up…

In today’s list I have selected several different styles of coats. I have included my number one choice and I dare you to figure it out. But if I select only one style, of course it will turn boring. So I decided to spice up the list with all the different styles of coats that I like. Given the opportunity, I would buy and wear any of them and I hope you would too. I hope you can find a favorite among these and make sure to let me know which one. If not, don’t worry. Tell me what kind of coat or jacket you prefer and why. Can’t want to hear from you!
