What I like most about furniture is that, in many cases, the pieces manage to tell a whole lot with very little. And we have a similar case in today’s article. I will introduce you to a few gorgeous and amazingly simple pieces that have a large and beautiful background. So, give me a chance to show you how simplicity and minimalism stand for so much more than meets the eye. And in order to focus on a particular subject, I have chosen to talk about urban influences in design. It may sound a bit weird at first, but trust me, you will love it by the end.
So what exactly do I mean when I say “urban influences” ? Well, actually exactly what it says. To me, this term refers to pieces of furniture or any home object, fashion piece or even accessory that remind us of the big city. And by this I actually refer to anything that is closer to a metropolis than to a small town. Thus, I would like when you read the words “city” or “town” in this article to think of places such as: Paris, New York, London, Berlin, etc. Because I won’t be referring exclusively to the cities but also to their people, atmosphere and lifestyle. But I will talk more about this in the next paragraph.
For now, let’s stick with the big cities and how do they influence design, fashion or any other creative art. To this day, I know and have known plenty of people who have confessed their desire to live in a big city. And in their words, this desire comes from a fairly general image that people have of the big cities. To everyone, including me, the big cities represent a source of life, excitement, opportunity and even eccentricity. Combine this with their grand buildings, busy streets and imposing structures and you get a real influential giant.
Big city life…
I have also mentioned that besides the imposing and impressive structure of the cities, their lifestyle and atmosphere are equally important. It is only normal to think that populated areas are populated for a reason. The fact that thousands of people choose the same spot to live can’t be a coincidence. Albeit, not every person will move in a city for the same reason, we can’t argue with that. But there has to be something or some things more specific to which people are attracted in the big cities. And I am sure that we can all know the reasons for which people move to the big city. This besides the obvious ones such as better jobs and education, of course.
For one thing, we have the popular 24 hour lifestyle, which attracts most young people. This gives any city an idea of excitement and intrigue that many search for, especially if we come from a small town. Next, we have the sense of escape that comes along with the idea that we are surrounded by hundreds and thousands of unknown people every day. Another would be what I like to call the “think big” factor. I believe this comes as a result of being surrounded by a big city with big buildings, big streets and even big parks. All of these will give anyone a sense of grandeur and make people not only think but also act big in order to get noticed.
When it comes to design, the city has truly left its mark. I have talked about a more direct influence of the city inside the household in a previous article entitled ‘Urban life, inspiration and design‘. In that particular article the city inspiration was obvious with just a glance in any of those pieces. Directly taken from the streets, the design included iconic and clear symbols of cities from around the world.
In today’s article, the products are much more subtle but still gorgeous. We could say that the products in today’s article are a good fit for a much more subtle home, a minimalist, or a modern one. I have selected pieces that reflect in small but beautiful aspects the big city. These take the idea of grand design and reduce it down in order to fit into your home. The designers have taken cold and rough materials found on the city streets and molded them into warm and practical pieces. From the rough steel roods and hard wood structures to beautifully bent iron and gorgeously molded wood elements.
With these final phrases, I will leave you to check out the products of today’s list. But I want to mention just a few things about them before you dive in. The products and pictured are all from the Urban Outfitters website. All credit belongs to them and I would like to take this opportunity and thank them. I also urge every one of you to check them and their products out because they are one of the top websites of their field. You will find the link for each product under the photo and I sincerely hope that you find something you like. Thank you for taking the time to read my ramblings and please enjoy the view:
